Sixty-nine years ago, the Humane Society of Sarasota County (HSSC) was formed as the area's first animal welfare organization and no-kill shelter. Yesterday, February 9, the HSSC team celebrated the private nonprofit’s 69th birthday with an animal “paw-ty” for its furry residents and the staff. The celebration also extends to all the animals currently residing n the shelter who don’t have a known birthday. In addition to the party and "good boy / good girl" treats, an anonymous donor gifted the organization and animals a birthday gift that'll keep on giving–sponsoring the next 20 adoptions, paying for all fees and adoption costs.
“Every animal in the shelter will get a special birthday treat, including pupcakes provided by Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming - Sarasota, cookies from DOGPerfect - Sarasota as well as popsicles and cat snacks made by the executive director of the Humane Society of Sarasota County, Anna Gonce. “We are entering into an amazing year for the organization, for our staff and, of course, our beloved pets," says Gonce. "we are so grateful to all the donors and volunteers who have supported us."
With almost seven decades under its belt, its mission remains the same–to find a safe and loving home for every adoptable pet the shelter houses. "It is amazing to see how far we have come from the tiny house on 15th."

Goodwill Manasota is partnering with United Way Suncoast to provide free tax preparation services in Sarasota County to low- to moderate-income households. Starting on February 13 and continuing through April 14, volunteers will assist with free tax preparation at Goodwill’s North Sarasota (5150 N. Tamiami Tr.) and Venice (676 S. Tamiami Tr.) locations. “We are happy to partner with Goodwill to ensure that community members have access to life-changing supports such as VITA,” said Bronwyn Beightol, Chief Impact Officer UWS. “Our partnership will make it possible for more of our ALICE families and individuals to take advantage of this free service.”

On February 5, Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota and DeSoto Counties presented its prestigious 2021 Youth of the Year title to local high school student Jorge Hernandez-Perez during its Steak & Burger drive-in celebration. "This program fosters a new generation of leaders, fully prepared to live and lead in a diverse, global and integrated world," said Bill Sadlo, President/CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota and DeSoto Counties. "As our 2021 Youth of the Year, Jorge will go on to the state competition with the chance to advance to the regional and national competitions."
In support of the Backpack program which provides children and students with nutritious snacks, and our programs that provide hunger relief to children, families, seniors and veterans in our community. All Faiths Food Bank recently received grants and support from the following foundations: $6,000 from The Cook Family Foundation in support of the Backpack program, $30,000 from the Roberta Leventhal Sudakoff Foundation in support of the Backpack program, $40,000 from the Harry Sudakoff Foundation in support of the Backpack program, $10,000 from the Culverhouse Family Foundation in support of hunger relief programs and $29,000 from the Wells Fargo Foundation in support of hunger relief programs.

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) can seem overwhelming, and some families incorrectly assume that they need not bother because their students would not qualify for aid.
The FAFSA is worth taking time to complete because:
- Financial aid is not just for low-income students.
- Many scholarships, grants and other types of merit-based awards require the FAFSA information.
- Technical college students are eligible for financial aid; it is not limited to traditional college or university students.
Help in completing the FAFSA is available at no charge to students and families. PLANit Sarasota, the local college access network, is providing FAFSA open houses, with trained volunteers, in February virtually or at LaunchPad4U, the Education Foundation of Sarasota’s community resource center located in the Rosemary District.

Fashion Funds the Cure is a nationwide runway tour shares the story of local children battling cancer and weaves their dreams for the future into a high-fashion, upscale event. Sarasota locals can enjoy the event on March 6th at the Mall at university Town center. Guests will enjoy live entertainment, the latest fashion designs, delicious bites and beverages, and passionate community leaders, Fashion Funds the Cure is truly an event to remember.
First Step of Sarasota announces it was awarded a $4M grant over the next 2 years from Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to become a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC) under their expansion Program. CCBHC Certification will further allow First Step of Sarasota to strengthen partnerships with local non-profits, medical communities, law enforcement agencies, judicial systems and schools to provide the necessary support and outreach services that are part of the designation.
ALSO Youth’s work to support the LGBTQ community has officially expanded (with the merger of Prism Youth Initiative in Manatee County) and is now searching for a new Executive Director to lead the combined non-profit serving both Sarasota and Manatee counties. The two nonprofits finalized their merger late last year to become a united organization. ALSO Youth has focused on advocacy, leadership, support and outreach for LGBTQ youth since 1992 – while Prism began its likeminded work to empower LGBTQ youth in Manatee County in 2010. Despite the year’s many challenges with COVID that forced most of the services to go virtual over the past year, ALSO Youth has been moving forward during COVID due to the tremendous community support for the organization and the dedication of its growing board and staff. ALSO Youth has resumed in-person programming at its Sarasota headquarters and Bradenton location. The new Executive Director will act as the CEO of ALSO Youth Sarasota/Manatee and is responsible for the overall administration and management of the Center(s), including: all personnel, fiscal and operational matters. The Executive Director will provide leadership in executing ALSO YOUTH strategy and oversight on all programs, services, fundraising development, and community outreach.

Florida Gulf Coast University has taken proactive measures to help safeguard its students, faculty and staff in buildings throughout the campus. B&I Contractors and Commercial Air Management recently partnered with the university to install of fifty-two bipolar ionization units inside air handlers in thirteen different buildings on the FGCU campus. These energy-efficient needlepoint bipolar ionization units are designed to reduce particulate matter, odors and pathogens such as bacteria, mold and viruses––including COVID-19.
Three prominent local leaders have joined the Board of Trustees at Doctors Hospital of Sarasota. Robert Browning, MD, Erin McLeod, and Veronica Thames will serve on the hospital board for three-year terms.

The Guerrilla Art Market presents the best in approachable and original local art with the freshest emerging artists in the Tampa Bay area. Get into St. Pete’s local culture and buy original work by many artists whose creations can be seen around town on the walls and streets of St. Pete. Artists working in all 2D and 3D media are encouraged to apply for upcoming markets. There is no cost to participate. An Evening With Gwendolyn? premieres on February 9 and will play on February 11 and February 13. The performance was conceived and performed by Eileen Earnest, written by Edgar Allan Poe. Gwendolyn Crosley, wife of inventor Powel Crosley, thoroughly enjoyed last night's séance. It's a shame she didn't get to speak with her favorite author, Edgar Allan Poe. She did make contact with an enigmatic friend of his, Sarah Royster. Alas, the encounter was brief and Gwendolyn returned home alone. Or did she? Eileen is an actor, improviser, and singer based in Cincinnati, Ohio. She is a member of OTRimprov (Citybeat Magazine's Best Improv Troupe 2014-2020) and ComedySportz Cincinnati, a Red Nose Doc for Healthy Humor Inc (Cincinnati Children's Hospital), a detective with Cincinnati Dinner Detective, and 50% of the comedy team, Two Sketchy Dames. In 2019, she became the Associate Artistic Director of Powel Crosley Theatre in Sarasota, FL.

Loosen Up with Aquamedia Painting Workshop with Visiting Artist Robert Burridge will take place February 8 through 10 from 11am to 5pm on Zoom. Burridge’s popular “Loosen Up” workshops nurture individual success and personal enrichment with a big emphasis on daily painting projects at your own pace. It is stress-free, but be warned; you could end up with too much enthusiasm for painting. This Burridge flagship workshop offers a variety of painting subjects for everyone. Designed for the professional painter who is stuck in a style as well as for the novice who wants to conquer their fear of painting. Starting each day with multiple, small “warm-up painting exercises” and up to larger-format paintings, Burridge’s positive approach towards the act of painting will inspire you to loosen up, have fun again and paint more. Expect an intense, concentrated and lively workshop where you will create many works of art using spontaneity for maximum effect. This workshop has become a must for artists who want the confidence and permission to paint the way they have always wanted to paint. Students will take home handouts with useful and need-to-know information. Burridge’s newest color combination technique is also demonstrated. A positive attitude is a must. This is an online course. Madeby Gallery hosting Disney Fine Artist - Ringling College of Art and Design Alumnus Tim Rogerson and the original Tinker Bell Margaret Kerry. Margaret, a Sarasota resident, will be sharing her amazing journey of how Walt chose her to be the original Tinker bell model for the Disney Animators’ in her book, "Tinker Bell Talks." Tim will be taking us on a tour of his magical Disney artwork. Originals, giclees and prints will be available for purchase. Tim has created exclusively for the show, his newest original of Tinker Bell, titled "Pixie Pose." The show runs from February 10 through Friday, March 12.

This month we are discussing The Tradition by Jericho Brown on February 10 at 2pm. A fee of $23 is required for participation. Since 2004, Embracing Our Differences has used the power of art and prose to promote diversity. One way it accomplishes this is through its annual, juried international outdoor art exhibition consisting of 50 billboard-sized works of art, each accompanied by an inspirational quote. The response to the call for artwork and inspirational quotes brought 15,912 entries pouring in from 128 countries and 48 states. Students from 412 schools around the world submitted artwork or quotes to the juried exhibit. The winning quotes and art will be showcased in the 18th annual exhibit, January 20 through April 1, in Sarasota’s Bayfront Park.
Box of Squirrels will play on February 10, 12 and 13. It was written and performed by Dennis McSorley. The tale paints the picture of a young man and his serendipitous start in teaching. Doubt and fear and uncertainty open a door he discovers. Who he meets through it become life long connections to trust and learning from others shaping his life in wondrous ways. A native New Yorker based in Vermont, he's been doing theater and storytelling over 20 years, even fooling the Brighton Fringe Festival UK into a Best Actor Nomination. His three solo works have been performed in Solo Festivals in NYC, Prague, Providence RI, Waterbury VT and SaraSolo! 'Typhoon of Tenderness' was cited for excellence in Prague in 2016 and received the "Best Drama" nod at The 2019 SaraSolo Festival.
Color & Clay, an installation by Joan Libby Hawk, ceramist, and Jana Millstone, painter, presents a unique conversation between artists and mediums at Art Uptown gallery, Sarasota. Artists Joan Libby Hawk, a ceramist, and Jana Millstone, a painter, present Color & Clay - A Duet, their unique conversation between artists and mediums. The collaborative exhibit of clay objects and paintings, on view at Art Uptown from January 30 to February 26, 2021, celebrates color, light and form. Sharing a contemporary visual sensibility, the artists explore the connections between their three-and two-dimensional work, riffing off the play of light, negative space and transparent color. The artists will host a Zoom conversation in early February to talk about their collaboration and the installation’s visual goals. Details to come.
